A brake disc is a round platter manufactured out of either ceramic or iron and used in conjunction with brake pads to halt a vehicles motion. A brake disc is also commonly referred to as a rotor and is found in vehicles which utilize disc brakes. Certain models of cars have front disc brakes, which mean they have this style of brakes on the front end while they utilize an older style brake known as a drum brake on the rear. The Civic SI Brake Disc is 10.22 inches in diameter and 1.66 inches deep. They are manufactured using high quality materials and offer excellent performance for braking. They also offer improved overall wear and do not suffer from brake heat as readily as many other brake rotors on the market.
Different Kinds of Brake Discs and Rotors:
Slotted: Slotted brake discs are designed to dissipate heat better than brake rotors that are solid. What distinguishes slotted discs are cuts in the actual discs that allow more air to flow inside the metal of the disc. With increased airflow, the discs can cool more quickly, which helps your stopping distance. It should be noted, however that by cutting notches into a brake rotor, you are giving up some of that surface area that is necessary for the brake pads to come in contact with, which can affect your stopping distance.
Cross Drilled: Cross drilled brake discs are designed to cool off quicker than standard brake discs. In fact, the goal is very similar to that of slotted brake discs, except that cross drilled rotors have holes drilled through them to help the discs cool off quicker. Very much like slotted discs, cross drilled discs give up some surface area, which can make the brake pads grip the disc less, affecting your stopping ability. It should be noted also that some high-performance cars such as Porsches come with cross drilled rotors.
