A clutch is a device within a vehicle which functions as an important part of a transmission. Both automatic and manual transmissions utilize a clutch. In a vehicle with an automatic transmission the clutch is operated completely independently of any interaction from the driver while a manual transmission utilizes a clutch pedal to operate the clutch. The clutch serves to effectively remove the transmission out of the driveshaft while the transmission is shifted to a different gear set. It then allows the transmission to drop back into the drive shaft smoothly in order to resume forward motion. This prevents damage to both the driveshaft gears and the transmission gears.
