A coilover is a term used in short to describe a coil over strut. It functions as part of the suspension system and helps to reduce shock and provide the appropriate ride height. Most of the smaller cars on the market, including the Civic SI, utilize a suspension system which makes use of coilovers. There are also a number of brands which offer adjustable coilover kits for cars such as the Honda Civic SI, which are designed in such a way to the owner to adjust the ground clearance on their car and adjust the stiffness of their shocks. These adjustments can lend themselves to a higher degree of performance when handling cornering or sharp turns though usually with the sacrifice of a smooth ride, or they can be used for the sole purpose of offering a lower ride which is often desired by many car enthusiasts.
