An exhaust tip is a tip which is placed on the end of the muffler and generally functions as an aesthetic improvement over the default muffler pipe. Under most circumstances a muffler is manufactured using either galvanized steel or brushed aluminum. These two materials function well for a muffler due to their ability to withstand extremely high temperatures. A car muffler can easily reach temperatures as high as eight hundred degrees. The only down fall to these materials is they are not aesthetically pleasing. For this reasons many car manufacturers began using exhaust tips to improve the visual appearance of the tail pipe. The Civic Si exhaust tip is manufactured using chrome which gives it a shiny metal appearance. Chrome also has the advantage of being largely unaffected by moisture so rust does not become an issue.
