An ignition system is the entire system utilized by an automobile such as a car or truck to ignite the fuel-air mixture in an internal combustion engine. This is done using a number of components. The main components in the ignition system are the battery, alternator, and spark plugs. The battery supplies the power to the spark plugs which is used to generate a tiny electrical spark. This electrical spark ignites the fuel and air causing the actual combustion reaction. The alternator’s function is to keep the battery charged. Without the alternator the battery would die quickly resulting in no spark. The Civic Si ignition system utilizes a high performance alternator and battery which are connected to platinum spark plugs. These platinum spark plugs produce a better spark than the more standard aluminum spark plugs resulting in a better combustion reaction.
