Piston rings are relatively simple metal rings which are inserted around the piston of an engine to ensure that the piston remains air and gas tight. This is extremely important for the overall performance of an engine due to the fact that engines need to be as close to air tight as possible so they can maintain the appropriate pressure to function properly. Piston rings must also be spaced correctly to ensure that they will provide their necessary function even when hot due to the fact that metal expands when heated. A Civic Si piston ring is designed using a high quality aluminum alloy which is extremely resilient to heat. They are spaced in such a way to allow for a high degree of pressure and heat without being affected. This allows the engine in the Civic Si to reach higher than average RPM ranges.
