The piston in an engine is one of the most important components. It is a fairly large cylinder shaped device attached to the connector rod. The piston is gas-tight through the use of piston rings which are simple metal rings. The combustion reaction occurs within the piston chamber. This combustion reaction pushes the piston down which in turns draws the other pistons up in a multi cylinder engine. Each stroke takes only a fraction of a second. The piston essentially drives the entire driveshaft. The Civic Si piston is designed using high quality materials which are resilient to high temperatures and high levels of friction. This allows it to function at optimal performance even when being exposed to high RPM ranges which increases the speed of the combustion reaction. This presents piston where which can be extremely detrimental to an engine’s performance.
