The timing belt in a car is used for the purpose of controlling the timing of the engine. This is achieved by connecting the crank shaft to the camshaft which allows the camshaft to spin. The timing system in most cars is designed to spin the camshaft at a specific percentage of the speed of the crankshaft which produces the correct timing for the engine. Variable timing systems utilize an additional computer controlled pulley to adjust the timing belt based on the driving conditions. The Civic Si timing belt uses a variable timing system so it has the additional timing pulley. This allows its timing to be adjusted by a computer based on the driving conditions currently being experienced, which leads to improved fuel economy, performance and a greater degree of horse power and torque.
